Introduction to Leading
and Anchor Building

Next Program

  • February 21 - 22, 2009
  • Contact Matt Walker for more information. Reservations taken via email and phone. Please call to set-up dates and times for your group.

This program is the first step in becoming a well-rounded climber and moving towards leading and more difficult climbs. This course takes you to the stage of being a fully participating member of the climbing team, able to make decisions about anchors and capable of their evaluation. We assume that you have had a fair bit of climbing experience before and know the basics of climbing so we do not spend time on climbing and movement skills - and focus on the art of placing protection and building strong, solid anchors.

    Locations

For this adventure we have chosen a variety of well-suited climbs on Mt. Lemmon and Cochise Stronghold. Our aim is to choose a climb that maximizes learning while offering an exhilarating and enjoyable experience.

    Itinerary

In a controlled on the ground setting we examine the following:

  • Types of protection equipment
  • Nut and camming device placement
  • Protection removal
  • Constructing anchors with webbing, rope and cordelettes
  • Using the anchor for belaying
  • Stance management and organization
  • Rope management
  • Instructors

Our guides are American Mountain Guides Association trained so you can expect the highest level of climbing and safety knowledge combined with solid instructional skills and professionalism.

    Equipment Required

Please bring the following to the course: Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for warm or cold, wet or dry weather, a sack lunch, sunscreen, sun hat, 2 quarts water, snacks, camera and film, and a day pack to carry it all.
